How do I use the forums?

If you would like to know more about how to use the Hysterectomy Association forums, this is the place to start. it covers most topics that might be of interest to you and explains more about updating your profile too..

How do I start a topic in the forums?

Before you begin, you must be logged in to the forums. If you have an account, use the login box at the top of the right-hand side bar. If you don’t have an account yet, please create one by going here first https://www.hysterectomy-association.org.uk/contact-us/join-us/

  1. Click the forums tab in the navigation bar at the top of the page.
  2. Find the forum section you would like to ask your question in. They are grouped into global themes such as Conditions (ie endometriosis, fibroids etc …) General Hysterectomy (alternatives to hysterectomy, recovery etc…) and Sexuality.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the topic page where you will find a New Topic box, fill in the title first – this the bit that will show up in the lists and act as a link to your question or comment. Then give a little more detail in the body, you can use a topic tag to make your question easier for others to find.
  4. Tick the box that says Notify me of any replies and then click submit.

Your question or comment will now appear at the top of the list in the section you chose. Please note that moderators can move questions to more appropriate sections if they feel it necessary.

Why are some topics greyed out?

We’ve decided that to try and reduce the load on the servers, we need to stop members replying to topics with more than 100 replies. You’ll still be able to see what’s in those topics, you just won#t be able to add to them.

This will have two benefits; the first is that we can maintain a faster server; the second is that we are encouraging people to start new topics on the things that matter to them.

Why can’t I post a reply to a topic?

There are two reasons why you can’t post a reply; the first is that you aren’t logged into the forums site. To overcome this, just login and go to the topic you want to add to.

The second is that the topic is closed. We are actively closing topics with too many replies in them – anything over 150 will be closed to new replies. This simply good practice and puts less strain on our servers. It also encourages members to start a new topic.

What is a topic tag?

A topic tag is a word that describes the overall subject of your question or comment. For example, you might have a tag that uses the name of a treatment you are considering. Please don’t use the category title as a tag.

When used correctly, tags create a link to common topics that may not exist in the same area of the forum. They provide you with an alternative way to navigate around information that might be useful or interesting.

How do I update my profile?

To update your profile click on the Profile link in the top navigation menu.

Change your DISPLAY name – you can change the name that appears on the forums, this is what people will see but it DOES NOT change your username.

Upload a profile image – it’s friendly to have an image on the forums, that way we can see who we’re chatting with. Try to make a small file size and square before uploading.

You can also upload a cover image, this is a picture that sits at the top of your profile page. It needs to be a small file size and rectangular in shape.

Settings

You can change a number of settings from your profile page:

  • You can choose which actions send you notifications from the Email settings page.
  • You can change who can see what from the Profile Visibility settings page.

You will get a notification when someone takes actions such as a friend request or sends you a message. You can see your notifications and reply to messages from the Notification section of the profile pages.

Friends

You can send a friend request to any other member of the forum, although they don’t have to accept it.

You can mute friends if you don’t want to see their updates by clicking the Mute button next to their name in your Friends list. They won’t be notified you have muted them.

You can also remove them from your friends list by clicking the Cancel Friendship button next to their name in your Friends list.

How can I quickly see what I’ve said in the forums?

You can see the topics you have started, replies and favourites in the Forums section of your profile pages.

What is Activity?

Activity is a list of all the actions you’ve taken in the community site and forums. Please note, it doesn’t list any activities, such as adding comments to posts on the main website.

You can see your own activity by clicking on the Activity section of your profile pages. You can see your Personal updates, any Mentions (using your @username) of you by other users, your Favourites,  and your Friends activity.

If you click on the username of another member when you are logged in you will be able to see their activity on the community as well, depending on how they have set their visibility.

You can also send a private or public message to another member; and you can send compliments as well. Why not thank someone for helping you today?

What is the difference between a public and a private message?

A private message is one that will only be seen between you and the person you sent it to.

A public message is one that will be visible to anyone visiting the profile of the person you sent the message to. It will also be visible on your own Activity list as well.
